When trades converge: mixed-use construction as a driver for integrated building processes
March 2026
RSB Rudolstädter Systembau relies on bocad for end-to-end, cross-material construction processes
Eschborn / Rudolstadt, March 2026. Against the backdrop of change in the construction industry, the steel construction sector faces the challenge of repositioning itself in order to remain fit for the future. Increasing complexity and cost pressures require integrated construction processes, which cannot be implemented without end-to-end digitalisation. Traditional trade boundaries are increasingly dissolving, and mixed-construction is gaining in importance. This also raises the demands on steel constructors: they must plan across materials, integrate their processes more closely and position themselves more broadly along the entire value chain.
This development is also changing the role of companies: RSB Rudolstädter Systembau GmbH is evolving from a steel construction firm into a general contractor.
“The boundaries between steel construction, design and project management are becoming increasingly blurred. Projects can no longer be divided into individual trades,” comments Simon Weilnhammer, Managing Director of RSB Rudolstädter Systembau GmbH.
In practice, this means that, until now, multiple systems have often been used for design, structural engineering and project management, with the coordination between them causing additional work – for example, when transferring and checking parts and materials lists.
To address this challenge, the company is consistently aligning its processes with an integrated digital environment and migrating large parts of its project management to bocad Hybrid. The cloud-based solution integrates steel, light metal, timber, facades and point clouds, enabling complex construction projects to be planned and implemented consistently, simplifying data flows, reducing manual input and managing projects more efficiently.
“Hybrid construction means thinking about materials and processes together. Many systems reach their limits here because they are not designed for multi-material projects. This is exactly where we come in,” explains Helmut Schuller, CEO of SCHULLER&Company. Against this backdrop, methodological approaches such as Lean Design and seamless, cross-disciplinary BIM integration are becoming increasingly important. It is crucial to bring together different materials, disciplines and processes within a consistent digital framework, from planning through design to execution.
bocad is continuously developed based on practical experience to support companies in implementing integrated, cross-material construction processes and to position them for the long-term future.
