THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION IS HYBRID
Hybrid construction: not a trend, but a competitive advantage
The intelligent combination of materials such as steel, wood, and concrete creates ecological, economic, and technical advantages and drives one of the world's largest growth markets.
At the same time, the construction industry is undergoing radical change: climate change and CO₂ targets are demanding new ways of thinking about the use of materials; skills shortages and time pressures are accelerating automation and digitalization; complex projects and high quality requirements demand cross-trade planning. New regulations and subsidies are focusing on sustainable construction methods and BIM; materials such as green steel and recycled concrete are gaining in importance; and modular and serial construction with prefabricated modules shortens construction times and reduces costs.
What does hybrid construction mean and why is it the future?
Hybrid construction stands for the targeted combination of different materials – primarily steel, wood, concrete, and their composites. This allows the respective strengths to be optimally utilized to realize sustainable, economical, and technically convincing solutions.
When it comes to hybrid construction, many people first think of wood and concrete. But true sustainability only comes about when all materials are used efficiently and in terms of their carbon footprint. Wood is not automatically sustainable – gluing, synthetic resins, and energy-intensive processing have their downsides. The same applies to concrete due to cement production. This is where steel construction plays to its strengths in a hybrid context and can redefine sustainability (keyword: “green steel”).
In short: hybrid construction combines traditional materials such as steel, wood, and concrete with prefabricated components made from combinations of these materials.
Digitalization as a success factor
Technologies such as BIM and AI are transforming planning, construction, and documentation. Sustainability and digitalization are not mutually exclusive—together, they enable sustainable construction.

PROVEN IN PRACTICE
Revit Integration – ROOTS Hamburg

bocad Hybrid in Use on Germany’s Tallest Timber Hybrid Building
In the Roots Hamburg project – delivered by Rubner – bocad was used for the technical detailing of 16,200 m² of timber frame wall elements. More than 5,500 m³ of softwood was used, prefabricated in the factory for maximum efficiency.
