PROJECT
CHALLENGES

Pavilion KA 300 Karlsruhe, Germany:
The flying structure is the highlight of Karlsruhe's summer festival celebrating the city's 300th anniversary. The project was designed as a flying structure and had to be demountable. The aim was to reuse materials. The KA300 pavilion was designed by J. Mayer H. Architekten. The pavilion had a footprint of 52 x 27 metres, a height of up to 16.4 metres and a usable area of approximately 1,000 m². The ceiling height of 5.20 metres emphasised the openness of the building, which had an exhibition level and two viewing platforms. The volume was 2,800 m³, the shell geometry of the beam construction was 12,700 m³.

ADVANTAGES

The demands on the software: Due to the inclined position of the columns, the geometry of each column-truss connection was different. The bracing of the structure was also geometrically complex to design, and a macro was programmed for some 'standard' connections. Almost every component was unique.

Features of bocad that were particularly helpful:
Programming macros for static connections.
